Every culture on earth has been shaped by its storytellers. Long before cameras and printing presses, the Griot was the keeper of memory, the living archive of a people's identity, carrying generations of history forward through voice and verse. The Obsidian Collection is that tradition made permanent.
We are building the boldest, most complete archive of Black visual and cultural history ever assembled — bringing together more than 300 collections onto a single platform, with images not seen in decades and the accurate metadata to tell accurate stories.
For too long, the documentary record of Black life has existed in fragments. Tucked inside the archives of historic Black newspapers. Preserved in the collections of community organizations, churches, family estates, and photographers whose work never found the platform it deserved. Significant in isolation. Transformative together.
The Obsidian Collection unites these collections through licensing agreements and direct acquisitions, making historically significant newspapers, research papers, photographs, magazines, and cultural artifacts available in many cases for the first time to the world. We do not simply digitize. We document. Every image is accompanied by verified, accurate metadata so that the people, places, and moments captured within it are identified correctly and contextualized fully.
Preservation
Historically significant collections that were in danger of being lost forever are now secured, digitized, and protected for generations to come.

A user friendly platform that makes the full breadth of Black cultural history available to researchers, filmmakers, educators, institutions, and the public.
Wealth
Archive owners who license their collections earn revenue each time their images reach the world. Those who choose to sell are compensated fairly for decades of stewardship.
